BIS stands for Bureau of Indian Standards. It is the National Standard Body of India established under the BIS Act, 2016, for the harmonious development of different standards, marking, and quality certification of goods. Earlier, it was covered under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, and was known as ISI (Indian Standards Institution), but in 1987, ISI was replaced by BIS. The main objective behind establishing BIS is to ensure that products manufactured by different companies are of substandard quality and pass through the standardization process to safeguard consumers from any hazardous effects. BIS is responsible for making different standards for different types of products. BIS also revises existing standards to conform to international standards from time to time.BIS mandates all manufacturers, whether domestic or foreign, to produce goods that fall under the Mandatory certification category to pass through the BIS certification process before launching their products in the market for consumers. At present, a large number of product categories are covered under BIS certification but not all categories come under the mandatory certification category. But for market penetration & consumer satisfaction, manufacturers must go for BIS certification of their products. It makes products more reliable & safer.
